Dissertation

“Contingent Valuation and Money Attitudes”

People differ in terms of their attitudes towards spending money, reaching from carefree expenditure to neurotic money retention. Given the empirical evidence regarding the influence of money attitudes on consumption patterns, it is hypothesised that this psychological variable also affects individuals’ behaviour on hypothetical markets, e.g. their answers to payment questions asked in contingent valuation surveys. In my dissertation I deal with the effect of money retention on stated willingness to pay for environmental improvements. The study provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of this respondent characteristic. It discovers a useful, hitherto overlooked predictor variable for stated willingness to pay.
